2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the ninth edition of the biennial Twenty20 International (T20I) tournament, will be co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States from 1 June to 29 June 2024. This marks the first ICC World Cup tournament to feature matches played in the United States and any country other than the West Indies in the Americas. England, the defending champions, will look to retain their title after defeating Pakistan in the previous edition’s final.
A record 20 teams will compete in the tournament, up from 16 in 2022, making it the biggest cricket tournament ever held by the ICC with 55 matches. The two hosts, along with the top eight teams from the previous tournament and the next two teams in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, automatically qualified. The remaining eight teams were determined through a regional qualification process, with Canada and Uganda making their men’s T20 World Cup debuts, and the United States participating for the first time as co-host.
Format
The 20 teams will be divided into four groups of five, with the top two from each group advancing to the Super 8 round. The Super 8 teams will be split into two groups of four, and the top two from each group will qualify for the knockout stage, consisting of two semi-finals and a final.
Host selection
In November 2021, the ICC announced that the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup would be played in the United States and the West Indies, following a joint bid by Cricket West Indies and USA Cricket. The ICC hopes that hosting a major competition for the first time will put the USA on the global cricketing map.
Teams and qualification
The top eight teams from the 2022 tournament, the two hosts, and the two best-ranked teams in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings as of 14 November 2022 qualified automatically. The remaining eight places were filled via the ICC’s regional qualifiers, with Ireland, Scotland, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Nepal, Oman, Namibia, and Uganda securing their spots. Zimbabwe became the only Test-playing country that failed to qualify.

Venues
In September 2023, the ICC confirmed three venues in the United States: Lauderhill (Central Broward Park), Dallas (Grand Prairie Stadium), and New York (Nassau County Stadium). A temporary modular stadium with a capacity of 34,000 will be built at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County, New York, while the existing stadiums in Fort Lauderdale and Dallas will have their capacities doubled through modular stadium solutions.
Seven venues in the Caribbean Islands of Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, St Lucia, St Vincent & The Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago were also confirmed. However, Trinidad’s Queen’s Park Oval will not host any World Cup matches, with fixtures moved to the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in San Fernando. Dominica withdrew its venue, Windsor Park, citing inability to complete infrastructural development before the tournament.
In January 2024, the ICC unveiled the proposed design of the modular stadium in New York City, named Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, expected to be ready by the end of May 2024.

Super 8s
After the group stage, the top two teams in each group will be placed into two groups of four teams in the Super 8 stage. This will be played as a single round-robin, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the knockout stage. If they advance from the group stage, seeded teams will be placed in pre-determined positions, regardless of whether they finish first or second in their group.
